English spelling in the United States is often different than British English spelling. Canadian usage of English is influenced by British and American spelling. Canadians use standard British spelling for some English words (centre, fibre) and American spelling for others (curb, lasagna). In Canada, it is acceptable to use either British or American spelling for many English words, such as: metre/meter, labor/labour, pretence/pretense, or program/programme. Whenever writing in English, however, you must be consistent. You should always use either British or American English spelling. For example, the words favour and labor should not be used in the same document. Although both American and British versions of English are considered correct, American spelling is usually simpler. Therefor, it is generally best to use American English spelling, unless a document is specifically created for British readers. Although spelling English correctly is largely a matter of practice, there are standard spelling rules. The main spelling changes made in the United Sates are as follows: |
